To visit the Stone Barns Center for Food Agriculture is to venture into the epicenter of the farm-to-table movement. Located on 80 acres of land in Westchester county, the organization and its research is staunchly dedicated to sustainable food practices. The center grows over 200 varieties of vegetables and raises chickens, geese, sheep, pigs, and bees using slow-food processes and zero pesticides, herbicides or chemical additives. The facilities themselves, or the “Stone Barn,” was formerly a dairy barn on the Rockefeller’s Pocantico estate before David Rockefeller and his daughter Peggy repurposed the space in 2004. Stone Barns’s visitor programming and volunteer opportunities run year-round. Though there was a more extensive offering pre-pandemic, the center still offers tours of the farm. After your visit, a meal at Blue Hill, where much of your meal was sourced onsite, is a must. A 30-minute drive from Stone Barns is The Bedford Post Inn, a charming hotel with a quiet celebrity tie as it’s partly owned by Westchester resident Richard Gere. The historic property, which dates back to the 1860s, features only eight rooms and most come outfitted with working fireplaces. There are also three restaurants onsite and a yoga studio. Flagstones lead you to the nearby woods for nature walks and then back to the inn, where you’ll find a pool on the grounds.
